FreeForma's debut bike inspiring the brands ethos: Free to Form FreeForma.
Created and Designed by Simon House and built by industrial designer Ben Wilson, the FreeForma bike is Slide and go with his 70 cc automatic Puch engine.
Wanting to design and create something original, House set out to look for the right team insane enough to join him in this project to create the perfect vehicle that infused the art of Surfing and Skating.
"You'll never get road tax on this" said Wilson to house on their first ever meeting. "That's fine, as long as we can ride on the nose of it I haven't got a problem," replied House. With that they set out to build Free Forma.
Wilson designed and built the fat tubing for the frame of the bike and also the Steel Fin on the back and then figured out how the gearing would work along with such a smaller skate back wheel. The only engine we could use that was right for the job was a 70 cc Austrian made PUCH automatic engine from the late 70's.
The most important and integral part of the bike was the board and fin. After extensive research making cut outs and mock ups, a chance flick though Men's File Magazine brought Devon-based Loki Longboards to the attention of the team. Here's what Dave Young, owner of Loki Longboards said of the project, "It was only on meeting for a swift half in the East end of London did I find out what we were in for. In a workshop around the corner were the key elements of this genius brainwave - a saddle, one wheel, handlebars, a fuel tank, frame and 2 grinning designers. The big challenge was to get the shape right, working with the organic curves of the tank and whilst allowing for an easy straddle. As well as making sure we kept true to classic surf/skate board aesthetics. For the timbers we used Iroko for its weather resistant qualities with contrasting spines in Canadian Maple."
The Alien egg Tank was sourced from the good old US OF A from Panic cycles and the custom graphics were done by the one and only Mr Neil Melliard, from Pro Sign, Neil is a renound pin striping artists based in Southeast London and has worked on many hot rods, bikes and race cars around the world and is highly regarded in his filed, it was a pleasure to work with him and Neil wasn't given a brief he was just handed the tank and that was it! The skate wheels
The Skate Wheels where made by a Mr Joe Rachtley, Joe is an amazing model maker and has worked on some incredible projects his best known for are his model BMX's Oh and his slide tricks. Joe hand machined the wheels from Polyurethane and also incorporated the FreeForma block logo into the rims of the Wheels.
The Beach bars were sourced and custom made in Devon on one of my many surf trips there at a place called Ilfracombe just a few bays along from Saunton Sands great for long boarding. Piggin Pipes specialises in Custom made Exhaust and Bars, and make a good cuppa tea!
